Condolence & Memory Journal

Dear Juan, Alma, Juan Mators Jr. and Alma Notaro: With a very heavy heart I convey my condolences to your family with the untimely passing of Manuel. I was one of Manuel's teachers here in the Kinesiology (Exercise Science) Department at UMass Amherst and have regularly stayed in touch with him throughout these years. Manuel is the kind of student we are very proud of and I will continue to cherish his warmth and kindness.

My friend, Manuel. I am so sad about this unexpected passing. You were a warm-hearted friend. I always appreciated your greetings and smiles, but I did not have a chance to tell you my gratitude. I am sad because I did not know anything even when you needed consolation. I prayed for you. I will sometimes recall you and your picture of the beautiful sea in your hometown. Thank you. Please rest in peace.

Dear Alma, Juan and family. Sending love from the many of us who had the brief fortune to meet Manuel this summer when he participated in a conference in Philadelphia. He was clearly an extraordinary person. May love touch the place that words cannot.

Dear Juan, Alma, Juan Mators Jr. and Alma Notaro, I am so sorry for your loss. I can't imagine what you all must be going through. I met Manuel for the first time this summer at a conference. I was immediately taken by his passion for important social justice issues and his aspiration to make the world a better place. I am so sorry to hear about Manuel's passing. I just met him a few months ago at a conference but I was inspired by his knowledge and passion, and the way he treated people gently and with respect. He seemed like a wonderful person and a gift to those who knew him. May he Rest In Peace.

My sincere sympathies for Juan and Alma and family, for the loss of Manuel, their dear son, in the prime of his life. I hope the love of friends and family can provide some solace and peace as you grieve. I did not meet Manuel, but in meeting his father and hearing his poetry, I believe Manuel's giving will continue through all those he loved, taught and inspired. May this bring comfort to the family.

Manuel radiated love and compassion even towards those who weren't closest to him. I am grateful for his camaraderie, which I will miss -- along with his laughter and warm, fierce spirit. I respected him immensely for his courageous willingness to really embrace vulnerability, and for his commitment to community work and activism. Although we had not been in touch for a while, I feel a profound sense of loss. Sending my deepest, deepest condolences from afar at this time of unimaginable pain.

The memory of Manny will always be a blessing to those of us who got to know and work with him at SageFox. His spirit was as large as his smile.
