Obituary for Charles H. "Chick" Simon

June 28, 2021
Shrewsbury, Massachusetts

Charles "Chick" H. Simon, a longtime Shrewsbury resident, local businessman and generous philanthropist passed away June 28th 2021.

He was born in Worcester, son of Norman and Sadie (Chavoor) Simon. He grew up in the Main South neighborhood of Worcester and graduated from South High School in 1952. He then went on to attend Worcester State College and after 51 years, received his bachelor's degree in 2007. He spent many hours in his youth at the Ionic Boys Club with his brother Gabe playing basketball and made friendships that would last a lifetime.
Chick was a born entrepreneur. At a young age, he worked at his family's market. He would go on to spend 40 years working in banking, finishing his career at Worcester County National Bank. He also established Simmco Corporation in 1984, a company that financed marine and mobile homes. He then partnered with another local businessman and financed their first Dunkin Donuts franchise.

Chick was an active member of the Shrewsbury Lions Club and was a longtime sponsor of the Shrewsbury Men's Softball League. He continued to this day to be an exceptional financial and passionate supporter of all things Boys and Girls Club of Worcester and in 2009 was inducted into their Hall of Fame.
In his younger years, he loved playing tennis with his wife Annie and the DRB's. He was a member of the former Worcester Diner's Club, loved playing bocce at the Italian American Victory Club and cards at the former Biscee Club. His favorite pastime was socializing with all his friends whether it was in York, ME, Aruba, Cape Cod, The Lakeside or Wexford House. He was also known to make a small wager on many things including the dogs at Lincoln Greyhound Park and the casinos in Atlantic City and just about any other thing including the color of the next car to round the corner. Chick and his red convertible could be found at St. Patrick's Day parades or playing the tambourine at the Greek or Albanian festivals. He enjoyed working in his prized flower garden and spending time with his grandchildren and all his nieces and nephews. He loved his warm Budweiser and a good game of Keno (1-4-7-34 you're welcome!) and often was quoted as saying "he had not had a glass of water in over 60 years".

His wife of 45 years, Anne M. "Annie" (Hartnett) Simon died in 2006. He leaves three children, Kevin and his wife Tara Simon of Buzzards Bay, Beth Simon of Shrewsbury and John and his wife Heather Renihan Simon, of Annapolis, MD; two grandsons, Patrick and Christopher Simon; and many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews. His best friend and brother Gabriel "Gabe" Simon passed away in 2017.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Shrewsbury Nursing Home for their amazing care and compassion that they provided to Chick and his family.
