Obituary

WEBSTER - John W. Curran, 96, formerly of Worcester passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 4, 2019, with his beloved family at his bedside. John was born and raised in Worcester, one of eight children to Patrick and Isabella (Fraser) Curran.
John attended Worcester public schools and then became a pipefitter, a talent that led him to work in the physical plant department for the Worcester School Department. He rose through the department to retire as the department supervisor following 43 years of service to the city.
Following his retirement, along with his son, Michael, John became of the co-owner of Curran's Anchor Lounge and the Sports Plus Inn, both in Millbury for many years. From those years working in the businesses, John fostered many great friendships. Like many other young men in his age group during World War II, John joined the US Navy and went on to proudly serve for several years as a Pharmacist's Mate attached to a Marine Corps regiment. During the summer months, you could easily have found John as he was tending to his large vegetable garden at home. He also found great pleasure in the peaceful waters on the shore of Webster Lake, his home for the past 30 years. He was a former member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Worcester and attended Sacred Heart Church in Webster.
John will be forever loved and deeply missed by his beloved wife of 34 years, Elizabeth A. McCarthy; his five children, Christopher Curran of Thompson, CT, Jillian Curran of Worcester, John W. Curran, Jr. and his wife, Marilyn of Shrewsbury, June Beam and her husband, Leslie of Worcester and Michael Curran and his wife, Amy of Millbury; his brother, William Curran of Tennessee, his five grandchildren, Leslie, Shaun and Matthew Beam, and Nathan and Megan Curran; his two great grandchildren, Tyler and Alexis Beam; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his six siblings, Mary A. Houlihan, Marjorie J. Tonelli, Joseph, Patrick, Francis and James Curran.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with John's family on Monday, July 8th from 4-7 p.m. at the Callahan, Fay & Caswell Life Celebration Funeral Home, 61 Myrtle Street, Worcester. His funeral will be held on Tuesday with the procession gathering at the funeral and proceeding to Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 1290 Grafton Street, Worcester for the celebration of a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Entombment will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
