Obituary for Roger Frank Martin

June 7, 1961 - January 4, 2021
Sterling, Massachusetts | Age 59

Roger Frank Martin, 59, passed away on January 4, 2021 at UMass Medical Center.

He was born in Worcester on June 7, 1961, son of Vida (Maddocks) Farrar and the late Christopher F. Martin. Roger graduated from Westborough High School and went on to study Mechanical Engineering at Central New England College where he earned his bachelor's degree. Roger was an accomplished engineer and surveyor who worked on various Civil Engineering projects including the Big Dig, the Northern Avenue Bridge, and many others in the greater New England area.

Roger was indefatigable; when he wasn't working at his vocation, he spent his leisure time… working even more. Whether it be a big job or small, he couldn't abide idly while a job that needed doing languished undone. Roger could fix just about anything, and he could also design and build anything he put his mind to. Roger thought of everything – hardly any problem ever arose on the job that he hadn't already considered (and solved).

Roger liked to spend his time at his properties in Maine. He enjoyed the outdoors, exploring hiking trails, and meandering car rides to places of interest. Roger was a skilled craftsman who seemed to be an expert at everything. No matter what he was doing, it always seemed as if he had already spent a whole lifetime perfecting the skill. This was exemplified in his hand crafting the home furnishings in their beloved cottage in Maine. From the tables, beds, and living room sofas, to every cabinet in the kitchen, Roger made them all. For him, it was a labor of love. Roger enjoyed looking at house plans for a planned reconstruction of their summer camp. Being a man who loved to help people, he also enjoyed helping his neighbors.

He is survived by his loving wife, Donna M. (DeRose) Martin; his mother, Vida Farrar; Stepfather, David Farrar, his siblings, Jim, Richard and William Martin. He is also survived by his stepmothers Sue Martin and Mary Flanagan and step siblings James Ringer, Carol Ringer, Kevin, David and Scott Farrar and many nieces and nephews.

Due to the ongoing pandemic and out of an abundance of caution, funeral services will be held privately. Fay Brothers Life Celebration Home, 1 West Boylston St., West Boylston is assisting Roger's family with arrangements. To view Roger's funeral service please visit the following link:
